ACTIVITIES designed to help children celebrate Keighley's heritage through art have been hailed as a huge success by organisers.

Arts organisations Keighley Creative and Kala Sangam joined forces to offer a range of free family sessions.

Events were held throughout the school summer holidays.

Heading up the design and implementation of the project was Keighley Creative arts and heritage officer, Lauren Kelly.

She made contact with Keighley Town Council, and plans were then drawn up to stage craft workshops alongside popular Play in the Park events – which are funded by the town council's events and community development committee and run by Bradford Community Play & Activities Development Service.

The Outdoor Creative Workshop programme was 'born'.

Lauren and fellow team members at Keighley Creative built a 'K-Town Cart' – a mobile arts and heritage stall – and took it to the events across the area.

The cart hosted 10 creative workshops at locations including Keighley's Lund Park and Cliffe Castle Park, and at Bronte playing fields, Oakworth.

Sessions were organised as part of the Arts and Heritage Community Project, spearheaded by Keighley Creative and Kala Sangam.

Lauren says: "The community was invited to explore its artistic talents and connect with its heritage.

"Participants of all ages enjoyed three engaging craft activities – contributing to a community quilt through embroidery, decorating a heritage tree and garden, and designing personalised postcards in order to share their stories.

"Our Outdoor Creative Workshop programme was a fantastic opportunity for the people of Keighley and the surrounding area to come together and celebrate our local heritage.

"Hundreds of people attended, and families got stuck in making their unique creations.

"Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this part of the Arts and Heritage Community Project a success."

Work created at the events will soon form part of three collaborative artworks, to be publicly displayed.

Lauren adds: "There will be more opportunities coming up for people to access the K-Town Cart. Anyone who would like to join in the fun can go to keighleycreative.org or follow @keighleycreative on social media for more information.
