OVER 1,000 motorists have been caught speeding – and more than 130 vehicles seized – as part of a crackdown on anti-social driving in Keighley.
New figures reveal that Operation Shipdon, launched in 2022, has also led to 19 arrests and over 200 reports for other traffic offences.
To date the campaign, a joint initiative between Keighley Town Council and West Yorkshire Police, has seen 1,066 speedsters snared and 137 vehicle seizures.
Residential locations across the town have been targeted in response to information received from the public.
Inspector John Barker, of Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team, says the initiative is having a "significant and positive impact".
He said: "We know that speeding and anti-social driving has been an ongoing concern for Keighley residents.
"Operation Shipdon was launched to tackle this with additional, dedicated speed enforcement in community concern locations.
"The speeding offence reports have resulted in either speed awareness courses, fixed penalty points or court summons. In turn this is having a significant and positive impact on people complying with the speed limits, and an improvement in standards of driving across the area.
"Road safety is a top priority for Keighley, supporting the aim of Vision Zero to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads to zero by 2040. By working in partnership, these additional resources for Keighley are supporting this aim and are helping to make the roads safer for all."
Keighley's town mayor, Councillor Gulfraz Hussain, says: "Operation Shipdon has made a real difference to our roads and the overall sense of safety within our community.
"By working hand in hand with West Yorkshire Police, we are taking a stance against those who endanger lives with reckless driving. I want to thank all those involved for their dedication to making Keighley a safer place."
In addition to the operation, the town council has four speed indication devices which can be deployed in areas across Keighley.
People are invited to submit details, via keighley.gov.uk/our-services/operation-shipdon, of any roads or streets they have concerns about.
