A HISTORIC hall is staging its first-ever celebration of Diwali.

The Hindu festival of lights is being marked at 17th-century East Riddlesden Hall.

From Friday, November 1, until Wednesday, November 13, the National Trust property and its gardens will be adorned with illuminated displays and decorations, and there will be a range of activities for visitors to get involved in.

Schoolchildren have played a central role in the preparations – making clay Diya lamps to help light-up the hall and taking part in a rangoli design competition, with the winning creation chosen to be used for a colouring activity in the hall's craft room.

During the celebrations, families will be able to create their own Diwali-inspired crafts, the tearoom will feature a special menu – including Kedleston curry – and the gift shop is to showcase a selection of themed products.

There will also be three open evenings.

Hester Pode, the welcome manager at East Riddlesden Hall, says: "For the first time ever, we are opening our doors to celebrate this vibrant festival. We can't wait to welcome visitors of all backgrounds to experience the rich traditions and beauty of Diwali.

"The displays and illuminations will make the hall look spectacular.

"We’re thrilled to offer an event that embraces the diversity and joy of Diwali.

"The hall and its gardens will be beautifully illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere for guests to explore.

"The gardens will be alive with light displays, while traditional Diwali decorations will adorn the interior of the hall.

"Visitors can wander through a lit nature trail, admiring the glowing surroundings, or step inside to see the hall transformed with vibrant colours, intricate rangoli designs and handmade decorations.

"For those looking to experience the hall in its full illuminated glory, the special open evenings will enable guests to enjoy the magical light displays after dark – a truly enchanting experience."

Emily Ghassempour – senior volunteering and communities officer at the hall, who has been pivotal to the planning of the event – pays tribute to the community's involvement.

She says: "Working with the community has been inspiring. Its knowledge has helped us create an authentic and welcoming Diwali celebration for people of all ages, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone."

Normal admission fees to the hall will apply, but there is no additional charge for the Diwali activities.
