KEIGHLEY Playhouse is heading Around the World in 80 Days.

It's presenting the Jules Verne classic at the Devonshire Street theatre this month.

The adaptation of the popular novel has been created by playwright Laura Eason, and director is Dale Chadwick.

Mark Rundle plays the wealthy Victorian gentleman Phileas Fogg, who wagers his life's fortune that he can circumnavigate the globe in just 80 days.

Accompanied by his valet Passepartout – played by Chris Avery – Fogg sets out on an escapade that takes him from the alleys of London to the exotic subcontinent and on to the Wild West, as they race against the clock on a succession of trains, steamers, a wind-propelled sledge and an elephant.

During their journey they encounter a vast array of characters including Mrs Aoude – played by Helen Procter – and Inspector Fix, portrayed by Dean Harness.

Other members of the cast include Harry Rundle, Howard Clements, Sarah Carr and Rachel Wallbank, who all play several different characters.

A spokesperson says: "The energetic eight-strong cast – not content with impersonating numerous characters – enlists audience assistance to help conjure illusions, all while maintaining a gently buoyant sense of disbelief.

"Director Dale Chadwick’s visionary staging brings Verne’s classic story to life in a way that honours its 19th-century charm while engaging today’s audiences with humour, suspense and a dash of modern flair. The production features captivating set designs that transform the stage into a series of locales, from bustling London streets to the vast deserts and seas that test Fogg’s resolve.

"Audiences are invited to join us as we journey across the globe in this thrilling adaptation of one of literature’s most enduring adventures. Don’t miss the chance to see Phileas Fogg and his companions defy the odds on a theatrical adventure you won’t soon forget."

Dale says the adaptation "captures the thrill and audacity" of Jules Verne’s original work.

He adds: "Through stellar performances and inventive staging, we are inviting audiences to take a journey that’s as funny and heartfelt as it is suspenseful.

"Mark Rundle brings an intensity and warmth to Phileas Fogg that’s absolutely magnetic, and Chris Avery’s Passepartout is full of charm and humour, making for a duo that’s impossible not to root for."

The production runs from Monday, November 25, until Saturday, November 30.
