A KEIGHLEY man who founded the Professional Muslim Institute says diversity is a strength.
Dr Javed Bashir, a senior lecturer at Leeds Trinity University, has marked Islamophobia Awareness Month by reflecting on life as a British Muslim.
He says: "Living as a British Muslim is both a privilege and a responsibility.
"It provides unique opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the fabric of this country, while holding onto our faith and values. It’s not about choosing one over the other, but finding harmony between the two.
"Understanding core values – such as democracy, respect for diversity and freedom of speech – is vital for integration and societal cohesion. These values create a foundation where everyone, regardless of background, can express themselves freely and live with dignity."
Dr Bashir has been acclaimed for his interfaith and intercultural work championing efforts to challenge misconceptions about Islam and promote understanding.
In 2020, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bradford.
He was praised for playing a “pivotal” role in promoting understanding and community cohesion within the district, his service to the community during the Covid-19 pandemic and his “unstinting” support of the university.
That year also saw him receive an Unsung Hero Award for bringing faith groups together to help others.
"Dialogue is powerful," says Dr Bashir. "When we come together to share experiences and address biases, we break down barriers and build bridges.
"The UK’s secular framework respects religious freedoms. As long as we communicate our needs respectfully, it’s possible to uphold our obligations while contributing positively to society.
"Also, charity is an integral part of our faith, and it’s a bridge to connect with others, to address shared challenges and foster goodwill."
Dr Bashir adds: "The identity of British Muslims is a unique intersection of faith and cultural heritage, offering opportunities to bridge divides and promote understanding.
"Our diversity is a strength. By participating in all aspects of British life and sharing our values, we enrich society and demonstrate the transformative power of unity.
"Through open dialogue and a commitment to shared values, we can secure a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone."
Dr Bashir also stresses the importance of education in shaping the future.
"Education equips individuals with the tools to succeed and to challenge stereotypes," he says.
"It’s especially important for the younger generation, who will carry the dual identity of being British and Muslim into the future."
