TEN motorists were caught dangerously overtaking an undercover police cyclist.
The drivers were given guidance on leaving a gap of at least 1.5 metres between their vehicles and bikes when passing, and were shown a specially-designed floor mat displaying the safe distance.
Police say further, similar operations will be carried out across West Yorkshire.
The initiative was staged in support of Vision Zero, which aims to reduce all deaths and serious injuries on the region's roads to zero by 2040.
Last year, four cyclists died on West Yorkshire's roads, and 164 were seriously injured.
"These are heartbreaking figures and we don’t want anyone else to suffer such tragedies," says Alison Lowe, chair of the West Yorkshire Vision Zero board and deputy mayor for policing and crime.
"Everyone has a responsibility to keep people safe on our roads, and Vision Zero can only work if everybody does their bit."
Police sergeant Andrew Sutcliffe urges motorists to ensure they are up to date with the Highway Code, particularly regarding safe passing distances, the hierarchy of road users and priorities at junctions, all of which were updated in 2022.
He adds: "All road users across West Yorkshire have the right to travel safely."
