A man from Keighley has taken part in the BBC’s new It’s A Knockout-style game show, Total Wipeout.

Joseph Kutney was one of the oldest contestants taking part in the tough obstacle course.

But the super-fit 45-year-old said he put rivals half his age to shame during his week competing in Brazil.

In the past he was an England karate champion and in recent years was on the winning team in the Ironman Triathlon.

And he teaches exercise classes at both Oakbank recreation centre and the Fitness First centre, in Keighley.

By day, father-of-two Joseph, of Nashville Road, is a designer at classroom furniture makers British Thornton.

Total Wipeout, screened on Saturday teatimes each week, features 20 competitors.

They compete in a series of physical challenges with the winner receiving £10,000. The games feature names like The Sweeper, Dizzy Drummers and Sucker Punch.

Joseph, a former Greenhead High School student, would not say how far he progressed, instead urging people to watch his appearance on February 7.

But he said: “I was competing against people half my age and beating them.

“It’s physically harder than it seems and there’s no chance to practice. It was a fantastic experience. “I did it to inspire other people my age. I’m doing this for the short, ugly, middle-aged guys out there!”

Joseph was among 160 people chosen from 4,000 entrants to travel to Brazil for the televised heats.

The auditions included on-camera interviews, push-ups and an obstacle course.

Joseph’s rival competitors included a cage fighter, Thai boxer, female bodybuilding champion and a 50-year-old marathon runner.
