Photographs of Keighley’s Second World War Spitfire and Hurricane appearing in this column several weeks ago prompted Miss Dilys Wigglesworth, of Grange Road, to seek out her snapshot of this group of children who helped raise the necessary funds.
She is third from the left on the back row. These girls lived in and around Aireworth Grove. One September Saturday in 1940 they gave a concert four times over.
The younger children recited nursery rhymes and the older ones sang, danced and did recitations. It was a simple enough entertainment but somebody took the trouble to make costumes and cups of tea were served. The event raised £10.10s towards the Spitfire-Hurricane Fund.
The Riddlesden side of town contributed other rather novel ideas, raising £3.10s from a “sale of copies of the Fuhrer’s Speech” and £7.11s.7½d from a “barrel organ effort”.
