In for a penny, in for a goat — that’s the pupils of Lees Primary School.
The youngsters donated coppers to raise money to buy a goat for an African family.
The target was £25 but the students collected £65 in just one week — enough for extra items.
They used the 1p and 2p coins to fill the shapes of endangered animals.
The collection was a highlight of work in preparation for the school’s Eco-day. Over several weeks each class worked on a different environmental theme, such as recycling or polar ice caps.
They presented their findings to parents in pictures, words and song during a special assembly last Friday.
School spokesman Liz Hustwick said: “It broadened the children’s horizons for environmental and ecological issues on a local level as well as a global level.”
