Photographed in the earlier 1900s, this was the older Fell Lane community before 20th century housing filled in the open spaces on both sides of the road.

Wall Street turns off on the left, with Nile Street farther back on the nearer side of the grocery store, which would become well-known colloquially as Fred’s. Fred Greenwood started business in 1928, also producing Fred’s Ices advertised by the slogan: “Taste the cream in our ice cream”. He died in 1979, aged 77.

Set back out of sight between the houses was the Fell Lane Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, opened in 1878 to accommodate 250. Around the time of this photograph it could muster some 150 children in its Sunday school. It closed for worship in 1990.

The droppings in the middle of the road indicate that this was still in part the age of the horse.

The photograph has been supplied by Mr Kevin Seaton, of Shann Lane, Keighley.
