Vandals have struck for the second time in less than a month at a Keighley railway crossing.

In the latest incident a large piece of metal placed across the line at Gotts Crossing was struck by a train, which was damaged and had to be withdrawn from service.

The incident happened at about 2.10pm, on Friday. The train was the 1.41pm Bradford Forster Square to Skipton service.

On January 20 a stone or rock was hurled at a train at the same location, in Cemetery Lane. The outer skin of the train’s windscreen was damaged but no one was injured.

British Transport Police are appealing for anyone with information about the latest incident to come forward.

Insp Glen Alderson said: “This was a very serious incident. Luckily, no one was injured but placing objects on railway lines can have severe consequences.

“Investigations are ongoing by British Transport Police to find the people responsible.

“We are appealing to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Hard Ings Bridge and Gotts Crossing areas of Keighley on Friday afternoon to contact us free on 0845 405040, quoting incident number 315 of 13/02/2009.”
