Pupils at Haworth Primary School will be joining in a nationwide attempt to break the world record for Fairtrade banana eating.

The fun will form part of the finale of a fortnight of activities, designed to help producers in developing countries get a fair price for their food and other goods.

Haworth’s own Fairtrade group is staging a variety of events during the period, which runs from next Monday until March 8.

One of the organisers, Chris Upton, said: “From noon on Friday, March 6, to noon on Saturday, March 7, we will attempt to break the world record for Fairtrade banana eating.

“Mrs Parkinson, the head teacher of Haworth Primary, is excited about the idea.

“We are hoping to get the whole school on board with various banana recipes, games and activities.

“We hope for a great day, full of colour and excitement.

“This event will be just one in a catalogue that Haworth — the world’s first Fairtrade village — will be putting on over the fortnight.”

The school’s participation in the banana eating event begins at 3pm, on March 6.
