An exhibition celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin has been launched at Cliffe Castle Museum, in Keighley.
The display, which will run throughout the year, focuses on Darwin’s education and background and his voyage of discovery on the HMS Beagle. There are also examples of moths and butterflies from South America, illustrating the type of species he would have encountered on his journey. Charles Darwin transformed science with his theory of evolution by natural selection and he spent a number of weeks in Ilkley during the time that his major work, Origin of the Species, was published.
A further exhibition will be held at Ilkley in September, coinciding with a major international Darwin conference hosted by Bradford University.
