Five cyclists with a spirit of adventure are wanted to help disabled youngsters get saddled up.

They are wanted to join a team of cyclists who are riding coast to coast to help raise money to kick-start a new cycling club for people with learning or physical disabilities.

More than a dozen riders will travel from Whitehaven to Sunderland from May 14-17.

The cycling team dubbed “The Hammsters” has already ridden twice from Bradford to its twin town of Hamm in Germany. The team included Keighley News editor Malcolm Hoddy who made the 600 miles round trip piloting a tandem with a partially sighted woman as “stoker”.

The rides raised money for Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure, which runs activity clubs in Keighley.

While on last year’s marathon cycle — which included several 100 mile a day rides — the cyclists suggested the charity start a cycling group.

Some of that ride’s proceeds have been used to buy specially adapted bikes. A number of the riders are also undergoing training to become volunteers for the new group.

The group will be launched on May 14, at Lister Park, in Bradford. The coast-to-coast cyclists are dropping in at the park before driving to Whitehaven to begin their ride.

Barry Thorne, funding officer with BDSL, said there was space on the coast-to-coast ride for five more cyclists.

Potential participants needed to be able to raise a minimum of £350 each in sponsorship. Anyone interested should contact 01274 437093 or e-mail bsr1@btconnect.com.

Added Barry, of Haworth: “It is amazing what has been achieved to date. The generosity of people and organisations has been incredible. The Hammsters are making a dream come true.”
