Pupils and staff at a Keighley primary school are celebrating official recognition of its “welcoming and purposeful” environment.

Eastwood Primary School has been presented with an Investors in Pupils award.

The scheme is administered by the West Yorkshire Investors in Pupils Partnership.

Head teacher Bill Bairstow said: “We regard it as a really great achievement as this is a prestigious award.

“Two assessors came to the school for a full day and talked to me and Ian Richardson, our Investors in Pupils co-ordinator, whose work has been invaluable.

“They also interviewed children, teachers and support staff, parents and governors.

“Afterwards they wrote a letter to the children saying how much they enjoyed their visit and that they were privileged to be here.”

He added the school had been working towards gaining the award for 18 months.

During their time at the school the assessors examined criteria such as pupil behaviour, attendance and punctuality and how pupils directly influenced the running of the school.

They said they were impressed by the clear rules and objectives laid out for each class and praised the children’s good understanding of how their school was funded.

Their report concluded: “There are effective systems to reward good behaviour, good attendance and class and individual successes. “Throughout the assessment it was clear that all pupils felt that they were valued and listened to.

“The school council is very well organised, proud of its status and feels it is making a difference.

“There is a sense of whole school teamwork.”
