A man is appealing for Silsden people who might be able to help him uncover the truth about an old town myth.

George Watson, of Breakmoor Avenue, Silsden, grew up with the belief that the Keighley Road playing fields were entrusted to the people of Silsden decades ago and the rights lie in the hands of four elderly trustees.

He said many residents he had spoken to were convinced of the same story but that Silsden Town Council seemed to know nothing about it.

After the town clerk looked back into documents and found no information indicating any trustees, Mr Watson launched a mission to uncover whether they really exist — and if the playing fields, in fact, belong to the people of Silsden.

He said: “I have been told that each of the four trustees had a responsibility for a different sport — football, cricket, tennis and bowls. I am just interested to see if anybody knows anything about it and if it is actually true.”

Mr Watson can be contacted by writing to him at 32 Breakmoor Avenue, Silsden BD20 9PW.
