Students at Parkside School in Cullingworth have enjoyed sizzling success in a competition.
Sixty children were challenged to devise their own sausage recipes. And three winners, one each from years seven, eight and nine, then turned their ideas into reality at local butchers Ellisons.
The finished products were given the thumbs-up by Parkside’s catering team, which now plans to serve all three varieties to pupils after the Easter break.
The successful creations were a pork, apple and honey sausage by Ellisha Blackwell, 11, from year seven; pork, lemongrass, ginger, soya sauce and egg, by Sam Ellis, 13, of year eight, and pork, apple, sage and red onion, by 13-year-old year nine student Laura Masson.
Parkside’s head of technology Jane Love said: “We gave the students an open brief, telling them that while their sausages must be made of meat the choice of flavours was entirely up to them.
“It was a design task in essence, involving an educational link-up with a local supplier, that allowed students to learn about making food in a business setting rather than a normal school kitchen.”
Ellisons’ John Ellison presented goodie bags, to the winners. He said: “We get as much of our meat as possible from Yorkshire farmers by forging local gate-to-plate partnerships that ensure total hands-on quality control and full traceability.
“It’s all about helping to boost the rural economy by encouraging people to produce and purchase food locally — at the same time educating our children and young people through initiatives such as this with Parkside School.”
Ellisons, which supplies Parkside with all its meat, is renowned for its sausages. At a British Pig Executive regional product evaluation event for butchers across the North-West, the business landed six awards.
