Police are appealing for information after a man was found with head injuries at Denholme yesterday morning.
It is believed the 43-year-old man may have been involved in a collision with a vehicle, but the circumstances are unclear.
Police were called by the ambulance service to a report of a possible road accident on the A629 at about 5am.
It is understood several people had stopped to help the victim at the scene.
Police would like to speak to anyone who saw an incident and in particular the driver of a silver-coloured saloon car who offered assistance.
The injured man is in Leeds General Infirmary where he is described as being in a stable condition.
Anybody able to help is asked to contact PC 1384 Robert Hampshire at Airedale and North Bradford roads policing unit on 0845 60 60 606.
