Former BBC Radio 2 presenter Malcolm Laycock, who was born in Keighley, died on Sunday, aged 71.
During 40 years in broadcasting he presented popular shows, including Sunday Night at 10.
He was born in 1938 and educated at Bradford Grammar School. While working as a teacher, Mr Laycock turned the school’s internal audio system into an in-house radio station, eventually joining BBC Radio London to produce educational programmes.
He helped set up London’s Jazz FM and in the mid-1990s became popular among BBC listeners as the voice of nostalgia programmes. Mr Laycock spent 14 years presenting Sunday Night at 10, a Radio 2 programme dedicated to music of the 1930s and 40s, but left last summer. His departure prompted outrage among his listeners.
Bob Shennan, controller of Radio 2 and 6 Music, said Mr Laycock’s former colleagues were “shocked and saddened” to hear of his death. Mr Laycock’s wife, Liz, was diagnosed with cancer in 2004 and died in July this year.
Mr Laycock is survived by two sons.
