A 94-year-old woman from Oxenhope who was orphaned at an early age has met the tiny fifth generation of her family.
Susan Doris Feather, from Shaw Lane, said, “It’s a long time since I have held one of these” as 12-week-old Brooke Cossins — her great-great-granddaughter — was placed into her arms for the first time on Saturday.
Wearing a delicate pink dress and weighing just a few pounds, Brooke may have been small but she signified something Mrs Feather never thought she would see — the fifth descendant in her bloodline.
A former mill and textiles worker, Mrs Feather moved to the village from Leeds with her grandfather after her mother died and lived with him until his death when she was just 14 years old. She had four children of her own, Frank, Alan, Irene and Eric, 76, who moved to Somerset as a young man in search of work with his Haworth wife and raised a family there. On Saturday, he, his daughter Angela Clapp, 52, and her daughter Karina Cossins, 24, along with other family members, made the journey from Somerset to introduce Karina’s baby Brooke to the first generation in a big celebration.
Mrs Feather said: “She is absolutely gorgeous. I have been looking forward to meeting her since she was born.
“People live longer these days but I think it is still quite rare to have five generations in your family.”
Mrs Feather’s son and Brooke’s great-grandfather, Eric, said: “I am very overwhelmed today and very proud — this is a great moment.”
