A woman on crutches was attacked as she walked through a snicket.
The 44-year-old was grabbed and punched in the face by a man demanding her mobile phone.
Police are appealing for information about the incident, which happened at Arncliffe Road – in the Knowle Park area of Keighley – at about 5.45pm on Tuesday.
The attacker, who was wearing a hooded top, fled empty handed.
The woman was shocked but physically uninjured.
The suspect is described as white and 5ft 6 to 5ft 9 tall and he was wearing dark clothing. The hood of his top was raised.
He was slurring his words and may have been drunk.
Detective Inspector John Mountain, of Airedale and North Bradford CID, said: “This was a shameful attack in which a woman who was in no position to defend herself was assaulted while going about her business.
“It is fortunate she was not injured and we need to identify the suspect as quickly as possible.
“Anyone who saw what happened or knows this man should contact Airedale and North Bradford CID on 0845 60 60 606 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
