Plans to crack down on cowboy clampers have been welcomed by Keighley MP Ann Cryer.

She welcomes Government proposals for a compulsory licensing scheme for all wheel-clamping businesses.

The scheme will impose limits on the size of penalties imposed, regulate towing practices and put in place an effective and fair appeals process.

Earlier this year, Mrs Cryer wrote to the Home Office to complain about the practices in car parks where the penalties are often totally disproportionate to the initial mistake or oversight.

She also submitted a comprehensive submission to the Home Affairs Select Committee inquiry into wheel clamping.

Mrs Cryer said: “There have been numerous instances of constituents and visitors contacting me after being clamped for fairly insignificant problems, such as being a few minutes late back to their car, parking a couple of inches over a white line or having an upside down ticket.

“I know people want further action against clamping companies who indulge in sharp practices, including unclear signage and excessive fees.”
