A row relating to David Hutchinson’s mother and girlfriend developed into a battle with police officers, magistrates in Bingley were told.

Hutchinson, of Holker Street, Keighley, punched a police officer in the face, challenged him to a one-on-one fight and had to be handcuffed and placed in a caged police vehicle. The 23-year-old kicked out in the van and continued to shout and swear in the custody area at Keighley Police Station, where he had to be forced into a cell, the bench heard on Friday.

Hutchinson, who admitted assaulting a constable and resisting arrest, was sentenced to a 12 months community order with 60 hours’ unpaid work, was electronically tagged for two months and curfewed from 7pm to 7am. He was also ordered to pay £100 towards costs.

The bench was told that he had a record of 39 offences since 2000, the last in July for being drunk and disorderly. His solicitor, Glen Chivers, said Hutchinson had an argument with his mother when in drink. When police arrived it was relatively civilised but then it erupted when he thought he was being manhandled.
