Descendants of soldiers commemorated at the Riddlesden War Memorial Institute have been asked to provide details about their relatives for a special open day.

The names of 17 soldiers from Riddlesden who were killed in the First World War appear on a plaque on the building.

Institute members hope to assemble enough information about the men to put together a display in their Scott Lane premises, on February 7, 2010. This will form part of a “Day of Celebration” to mark the 90th anniversary of the institute’s opening and to encourage more groups to take advantage of the facility. Committee member Joyce Proctor said she would welcome photographs, written information and other memorabilia connected to the wartime troops.

She said the institute currently hosted activities such as dancing, toddler group sessions and Weight Watchers classes. But she said it could be used more extensively.

She said the public celebration day would feature First and Second World War re-enactment groups, a choir, a talk by Keighley historian Ian Dewhirst and displays by local and family history societies.

People willing to loan items related to the 17 commemorated soldiers can contact Joyce on 01535 602965 or email joyce-proctor@live.co.uk.
