Fire chiefs in the region have launched a festive safety campaign.

They are urging Keighley householders to ensure they have a working smoke alarm.

And motorists are being warned to take extra care on the roads.

Two hard-hitting images are appearing on a range of materials, including posters and fliers.

One shows mistletoe hanging from a smoke alarm with the caption: “The Kiss of Life. Make sure your smoke alarm works — it won’t leave you breathless”.

And the other depicts firefighters at the scene of an overturned car with the caption: “Tis the season to be safer”.

The “Celebrate Safer” campaign also has a dedicated website — celebratesafer.co.uk — containing advice and enabling people to book a free home fire safety check. Assistant chief fire officer Craig McIntosh said: “A working smoke alarm can mean the difference between life and death.

“In fact, if you don’t have a smoke alarm, or if your alarm does not work, you are more than twice as likely to die if you have a fire.

“Give your loved ones the best Christmas present possible and either book a free home fire safety check with your local fire station, which involves the fitting of free smoke alarms, or check your alarms regularly.”

He added that motorists should also take steps to avoid a tragedy.

“Christmas is a joyous time but, unfortunately, it is also a tragic time for many,” he said.

“Please drive safely and make this a Christmas to remember for all the right reasons.”
