Haworth Primary School is celebrating achieving a prestigious Food for Life Partnership Silver Mark.

It won the award for its commitment to reconnecting young people with growing, cooking and eating healthy food.

The Food for Life Partnership (FFLP) is a network of schools and communities across England working to revolutionise school meals and inspire families to cook and grow their own food. The initiative is led by the Soil Association, which is a national environmental charity.

Haworth Primary has a cookery club and each class has its own vegetable bed. Pupils regularly cook and eat produce from the school growing area.

The school is now working towards the FFLP’s Gold Mark.

Head teacher Janet Parkinson said: “We decided to join the partnership to build on the wonderful work of our gardening club and eco activities, extending this work into cooking and growing as part of the curriculum.

“There are currently only four schools in the Yorkshire and Humberside area and 22 in the country with the silver mark and one with gold.

“As a flagship for the partnership, we share our practice with other schools and the community.

“I am so proud of all the staff and pupils, as we have achieved both bronze and silver in only 18 months, which is an incredible achievement. I particularly want to thank Roger Sheard and Linda Johnston, from Facilities Management Catering, for their vision and support in this project.

“Also, our FFLP leaders, Steve Thorpe, Tracy Roe, Andrienne Feather and Rachel Abbott, have worked so well as a team to promote healthy lifestyles.”

Mr Thorpe, who founded the school’s gardening club, said: “I am really proud to be associated with the school and to be part of the tremendous team that has achieved this award.

“Such a small seed was sown when the club was formed but hard work, vision and great team work by so many has led to it growing and branching out into what it is today.”

School food co-ordinator Tracy Roe said: “The children all look forward to cooking lessons and cooking club.

“They have learned so many new skills that they will take with them into their adult lives.”

Amanda Donnelly, FFLP co-ordinator for Yorkshire and Humber, said: “We are delighted that Haworth Primary has achieved the silver mark award.

“This demonstrates recognition for the fantastic work that the school is doing to transform food culture.”
