An Oxenhope resident is staging a candlelit vigil in Keighley town centre this weekend to draw attention to the threat posed by climate change.

John Drury has planned the event for this Saturday evening on Church Green to coincide with the international Copenhagen summit.

Delegates from 192 countries are engaged in talks aimed at securing a global deal on how to drastically reduce pollution.

Mr Drury said: “It’s only dawning on me just how important it is for ordinary people to get involved with issues around climate change.

“This is something that is passing many of us by but we all need it brought into our consciousness. This is part of a series of worldwide vigils to show governments that this is a serious concern for people.”

Mr Drury, a company director of the Bradford-based enterprise Supported Lives, which helps vulnerable people live more independently, said the call for candlelit vigils across the world during the Copenhagen summit was being promoted by the online campaign group Avaaz. He said the vigil on Church Green would run from 6-7pm and all were welcome to attend.

He said the timing meant people who took part should be able to get home in time for the final of the X Factor talent show. For further information call 01274 377107.
