A head for heights is an essential attribute for gas worker Andy Miller.

For he’s the man responsible for ensuring Keighley’s 101ft-tall gas holder is prepared for winter.

Andy, 43, said: “It can be quite daunting climbing to the top of a holder, especially if the wind is blowing. The steps are very narrow and it’s certainly not one for those with vertigo.

“The views are amazing, a real perk of the job.”

He works for United Utilities, which maintains the town’s gas holder on behalf of its owner Northern Gas Networks.

Holders store gas for when demand is at its peak so that when thermostats are turned up, there is always a seamless supply.

Ascent is only possible by a hair-raising vertical climb of the frame but sometimes specialists are brought in to abseil down the 122ft-diameter structures to survey hard-to-reach sections.
