Burglars have struck at a charity shop that raises money for young orphans in Zambia.

Raiders broke into the Mpika premises, in Lawkholme Lane, Keighley, last night and stole £25 after smashing open a safe.

“They made a terrible mess,” said June Martin, chairman and co-founder of the Mpika Relief Fund, which supports a children’s orphanage.

“It’s not so much the money that’s an issue – we never keep a lot on the premises – it’s the distress this sort of thing causes to the staff, who are all volunteers.

“It makes you wonder what you have got to do to make your property safe.”

The break-in was discovered by shop manager Jacqueline Wilkinson when she arrived to open up this morning.

Airedale and North Bradford Police confirmed it had received a report of a burglary at the premises and scenes-of-crime officers were due to attend.

A year ago the charity’s other shop, in Denholme, was also targeted by burglars.
