Developers have reassured Cullingworth residents that their plans for Manywells Industrial Estate do not include a contaminated former landfill site.

Outline plans for houses, business units and a nursing home at the site were passed by Shipley Area Planning Panel last week. Steve McBurney, of the developers’ agents Commercial Estates Group, said: “We will now work closely with council officers to bring forward the detailed planning and redevelopment of the site.

“The site proposed for development is not on the landfill site, nor has it been contaminated by the landfill site.

“In fact, this regeneration scheme will deliver more, better quality, jobs, will not result in any unacceptable traffic and will provide an opportunity to make a positive contribution towards nature conservation, new outdoor recreation and affordable housing provision.”

The developer is a firm called GMV Thirteen Ltd.

According to its agents, more than 95 per cent of respondents to a village questionnaire wanted to see the site redeveloped. Jacqui Guy, chairman of Cullingworth Parish Council, which made objections, said: “What is disappointing is as parish councillors we have no powers. It is disappointing because we rely on the planning department for its integrity and professionalism and we think the planning department has let down the parish council.”
