Currying favour with the Keighley town mayor were staff from Oakbank School.

They served up a curry lunch to 58 staff members to raise money for one of mayor Margaret Ward’s charities, the Salvation Army.

The event raised £210 for the Salvation Army and £58 for children who suffered radiation poisoning from the Chernobyl disaster. Northern Leave, of Dalton Lane, Keighley, provided the curries, giving Oakbank a discount because the event was for charity.

Oakbank’s year seven student council took responsibility for collecting tins and raising money for the Salvation Army.

It held a book stall and sold raffle tickets with prizes provided by the Broomhill Co-op mini-market. Cllr Ward has now asked the school council if it would like to hold one of its meetings in the council chambers in Keighley Town Hall.

Members of staff who helped included Wendy Richardson — who organised the lunch with Mohammed Arfan — Elena Smith, Ruth Simpson and Linda Sands.
