Keighley & Craven’s Rosie Hellawell has nailed her first British Open Fell Running Association (BOFRA) title.

As well as being the first woman to finish in the Arncliffe Gala, she was halfway out of all the senior runners as she became a firm favourite to lift the overall women’s under-23 category.

The sun didn’t shine but Appletreewick’s Ted Mason found conditions to his liking as he romped to victory in the men’s race.

The defending BOFRA champion honed his climbing ability, speed and agility across limestone terrain on a course which involves just 499 feet of climbing and is less than two miles long.

Essentially it is a mad dash for the runners and it was no surprise to see the Wharfedale Harrier finish first in 10min 47sec, well ahead of second-placed Ian Holmes of Bingley Harriers.

It was also a good day for Silsden’s Jonny Bradshaw, who was the first under-23 finisher in an excellent fourth place.

Cross Hills postman Barry Scholes was the first veteran 60 runner home, while Bingley Harrier Matt-hew Merrick was their highest counter in fourth place in the boys’ under-14 race.

His sister Victoria held off the fast-finishing Helm runner Imogen Burrow to take the girls’ race, while Keighley & Craven’s Katie Atkinson ran impressively and was the first under-12 girl home.

Keighley & Craven have produced some brilliant fell runners over the years and are great supporters of BOFRA events at all levels. They had six of the first seven finishers in the under-nine race.

Evan Mills was the winner while Beth Roberts was the first girl.
