Oxenhope 1 East End Park 5

Oxenhope’s slide down the table continued, their cause not being helped by being reduced to ten men after just five minutes when stand-in full back Steve Davies was shown a red card.

It came following an ill-timed tackle and the referee deemed him the last defender.

To rub salt in the wound East End scored from the resulting free-kick.

Oxenhope’s ten men raised their game and put the visitors under pressure. A corner from Dan Moriarty found James Bailey, he flicked it on to Gaz Ritson and his shot rattled the crossbar.

A Moriarty free-kick then found the head of Scott Nelson but the keeper saved.

Eventually the pressure told. Jonathan Clewes cut into the area, he was brought down and Moriarty stroked home the resulting penalty.

Oxenhope continued to press, as Moriarty swung in a cross that Bailey failed to connect with at the far post.

The Leeds team were always dangerous on the counter-attack and, on 35 minutes, a cross to the far stick was fired in to restore their advantage.

Stand-in keeper Grahame Ellis then made a superb diving one-handed save just before the break to maintain the 2-1 deficit.

The visitors’ one-man advantage and physical superiority told just past the hour when a cross from the left was met with a header at the far post by their tall striker.

As Oxenhope tired, East End made it four on 80 minutes when a cross from the right was again headed in.

The Worth Valley side continued to battle and Nelson was unlucky when his rasping shot hit the woodwork before the visitors hit their fifth in the final minute.

Oxenhope will hope to end this poor run of results when they travel to in-form newly-promoted side Shelley on Saturday (2.30pm).

Oxenhope: Ellis, Pullan (McNicol), Davies, Nelson, Scott, White, Clewes, Moriarty, Bailey, Trowers, Ritson (Marshall).

Oxenhope took an early lead from a penalty when Liam Blacka weaved his way into the box before being brought down and Will Lee made no mistake with the spot-kick.

On 20 minutes, Leon Smith resisted two heavy challenges before chipping the keeper for number two.

At the other end, keeper Pete Gower, returning after a season out through injury, made a top-drawer save in a one-on-one but Wetherby reduced the deficit just before the break.

Man of the match Smith scored his second soon after the restart with a great solo effort before Craig Morris set up Sean Quinlan for a cheeky chip to make it 4-1.

A 25-yard screamer pulled one back put Chris Galdes stabbed the ball into the roof of the net from a corner to claim a fifth for Oxenhope.

On Saturday the reserves host Brighouse at Marley (2.30pm).
