Keighley player-coach Paul March has backed full back James Craven to prove a major success at Cougar Park next season.

With major doubts surrounding the future of Craig Moss due to work commitments, March signed Craven from Dewsbury Rams on a one-year deal.

Both March and Craven hail from Dewsbury and they have known each other for years.

March said: “I coached James at Thornhill in Dewsbury at Under-13s and then again at Under-17s and open-age level. I know a lot about him and he’s the kind of player I want at the club.

“Two years ago, he was probably the best full back in the division but was being played out of position this year on the wing.

“Obviously you want to play in your natural position and it’s a new challenge for him coming here. He’s not playing for his hometown club anymore. He’s moving away from there to come and play for Keighley Cougars.

“Hopefully that’s a massive pat on the back for us.”

March has also backed forward Jack Lee to prosper following his arrival from Featherstone.

The player-boss added: “Jack’s only a youngster but he played about five games for Featherstone this year under Daryl Powell. Once Daryl left, he didn’t play again but he did play in the Under-20s against us four times this season.

“And he was exceptional in every game he played against us.

“He’s like Josh Lynam – a young lad who has got something to prove and I’m glad he chose to come to us.”

Meanwhile, Cougars have confirmed the departure of centre Joe Chandler, who has joined rivals Batley (along with Scott Leatherbarrow), and prop Lewis Reed, who is heading to Hunslet Hawks.
