The Worth Valley bowling season came to a great conclusion with divisional cup finals, the end of season doubles and the veteran cups all completed in three days last weekend.

In the Third Division final for the Chairman’s Cup at Broughton Road, Steeton B defeated Bingley B by nine points after good wins by Wendy Ward, Alan Jeffrey and the Greens, Janet and Peter.

Steve Porritt’s 21-9 victory reduced the arrears for Bingley but came too late.

Keighley A completed a cup and league double by beating Bradshaw A in the Second Division final by only eight points after conceding an 18 start. They had only one loser but Anthony Emmott’s 21-11 paved the way to success.

In the Division One final, Cross Roads A won the title in the Valley Cup for the third time in succession after narrowly beating old rivals Cross Hills A by three points.

The losers had five winners and were a little unlucky but good wins by the experienced Richard and Trevor Hargreaves, plus Phil Anderson, saw the holders home.

On Sunday, the end of season doubles were completed at Keighley BC. Competitors found the autumnal leaves the chief problem but that did not stop host player Paul McHale and Steve Griffiths, of Denholme, taking the title with a comfortable 21-15 win over league secretary Mick Demain, of Craven, and Anderson.

It was Griffiths’ second win in Valley events this year. Losing in the semis were Mick Cox and Mick Claxton, of Gargrave, and Colin Barnes and Stefan Kitt, of Whins Wood.

The veteran play-offs were at Lund Park, where Cross Hills had three teams in the four finals. Their C team had their only success in the Fourth Division final for the Capstick Shield when they easily beat Cullingworth C, thanks to a great win by Christine and Donald McLeod, which offset a reply by Jennifer Dyson and Pat Goff for the losers.

Cross Hills B were well beaten in the Holmes Cup final by relegated Whins Wood, who coasted to an easy victory with good wins by Harry and Ted Barnes and Donald Bunting and Roy Storton.

Cross Hills A had little joy either, losing narrowly in the Division One final for the Burgess Shield to Silsden Playing Fields A, for whom Bob Scott and Alan Pennington excelled despite Barry Turnbull and Ronnie Elrick’s reply.

The Second Division final saw Bradshaw A easily account for Silsden PF C despite a good effort by Jean Brown and Brian Skinner.

Hard-working secretary Mick Demain attended all these games to continue his excellent work for the association.

Peter Clarke and Scott Bairstow, of Cross Roads, were comfortable winners of the Saville Floodlit Pairs recently with a 15-9 victory over Gareth Swaine and John Robinson of Ludden-denfoot.

Not so lucky was Richard Hargreaves, of Cross Roads, who reached the final of the Hebden League’s Champion of Champions at Sowerby but lost 21-17 to Todmorden Park’s Sean Frewin.

Cross Roads are in action this Sunday in the Yorkshire Parks Victory Cup when they meet Aire-Wharfe champions Black Swan, of Harrogate, at 10am at Colton.
