FA Cup Preliminary round: Silsden AFC 0 Padiham 2
THE tables were turned as Padiham avenged their 3-2 league defeat to Silsden four days earlier to knock the Cobbydalers out of the FA Cup.
The home side were without the experienced Kevin Ryan for Saturday's game while Padiham brought in former Cobbydalers favourite Andy Hill who replaced Joshua Walne.
The match followed a similar pattern to the league game with the Storks looking dangerous down the right where the trickery of Alex Ralph caused problems.
Padiham's Sean Cookson headed Kieron Pickup's cross over the bar early on before an excellent tackle by Joe Mitchell thwarted Pickup. Sedou Bamba then headed over for the Storks.
The visitors were enjoying the bulk of possession. But midway through the half Matty Moses slid the ball into the Stork's penalty area to Craig Nicholls. Nicholls evaded his marker and appeared to have been tripped, but no penalty was given.
Padiham began to dominate possession, but neither side looked particularly dangerous in attack. But the Cobbydalers defence was then caught ball watching and Cookson was able to run on to a through ball to slide in the opener on 26 minutes.
Silsden responded with Chris Wademan breaking to the byline. He pulled the ball back to Mitchell who drove into the area and shot low. But Padiham keeper Sean Davis parried the shot and the ball was cleared.
Curtis Haley then volleyed wide for the visitors and Martin Broderick saw his low drive saved by Davis.
On 39 minutes the visitors were awarded a penalty. Pickup broke down the right and hit the ball into the box. Crabtree was running back and the ball struck his hand. It looked like ball-to-hand, but the referee pointed to the spot.
Pickup buried the penalty to give the Storks a 2-0 advantage.
Padiham sat back in the second half aiming to play on the counter attack. Crabtree shot over early on for Silsden before Wademan hit a rasping shot from the left, which Davis tipped over the bar.
A two-footed challenge by Martin Parkes on Wademan saw the Cobbydalers awarded a penalty on 67 minutes.
Mitchell, who had scored three out of three spot-kicks this season, hit a powerful shot but Davis managed to parry it and the ball was cleared.
Will Storrie, on for Haworth, brought another save from Davis with five minutes left. But it was too little too late.
The Storks progress to meet either Lancaster City or Marske United.
The Cobbydalers entertained Ashton Athletic on Tuesday while Thornaby are the visitors on Saturday for the start of the FA Vase competition.
Silsden AFC: Thorpe, Moses, Crabtree (Hollindrake 76), Haworth (Storrie 58), Guilfoyle, Mitchell, Broderick, Brooks, Nicholls (Dale 68), Wademan, Ndlovu. Subs not used. Jalil, Elliott.
