THERE have been several sightings of large shoals of bream and roach on the canal close to rhododendrons at Leaches Bridge in Riddlesden.
One member reported a good haul of both species on this stretch of the water during a three-hour session using a variety of bait including chopped worm fished on the pole.
The river is also showing well following improved weather conditions. Although temperatures have cooled in the past week, chub and dace have been offering good sport along many shallow swims, notably on stretches of water between Kildwick and Silsden and at Utley.
Traditional bait fishing resumes on the river from tomorrow. Club books and day tickets are available from local tackle shops.
The club has issued a warning for members to be on the lookout for giant hogweed which grows along some stretches of the river Aire.
The plant can be harmful if it comes into contact with the skin. The club is taking steps to tackle to problem and has begun a programme of targeted spraying to eradicate the weed along stretches of the river bank.
Meanwhile the club noted with great sadness the death of a much respected and popular member. Mick Clayton had been part of Keighley Angling Club for many years. He brought wisdom and experience to the sport and will be missed by the many friends he made. The club extends its sympathy to Mick’s family.
