Retired Keighley Cougar stalwart Matt Foster will be reunited with his old team, Doncaster Lakers, when they come to Cougar Park for a pre-season match which kicks off at 3pm on Sunday.

The game against the Doncaster side, who were relegated from National League One last season, will be Foster's testimonial match for the Cougars.

"It's going to be Matt's big day. It recognises his achievements and his long-standing at the club."

Eaton said Foster will captain the side for the day and he will start in the No 4, left centre, position.

Eaton added: "Matt has been training with the first team squad for the last couple of weeks so that he is not too out of shape."

Foster, who said he has not played rugby since his retirement, is geared up for the contest against his former club.

He signed for Doncaster as an 18-year-old in 1994. He played in the club's U-18s squad and also had seven first team games for Doncaster when they were in the old First Division.

Foster said: "Keighley are my first club but the second fixture I always look for is Doncaster."

He said it is fitting for him to have his testimonial against a team which he started his rugby league playing career with.

Foster is hoping to himself justice by playing well on Sunday.

"The ideal way to go out would be with a nice win under my belt."

Foster is also excited to go out against a side coached by rugby legend Ellery Hanley.

Hanley was a stand off and loose forward who played for Bradford Northern, Wigan, and Leeds and was capped 34 times before he was honoured with an MBE in 1990 for his services to rugby league.

Sunday will be Hanley's first game in charge of his new club.

Foster said: "He's a massive name in the game. When I was young he was the player you wanted to be like."

Hanley and his squad will be facing a Cougar squad who are in a rich vein of form.

"These guys are really cooking on gas," said Foster. The atmosphere in the camp is good and the new signings seem to be gelling well."

Eaton added: "Apart from Matt's testimonial, this Sunday is going to be another serious game for the squad."

The coach said he saw some good things from his squad against Batley last Sunday, and he is expecting this weekend's game to be even tougher.

"Although Doncaster are now in our division, this is a prestigious game for us.

"They've recruited heavily, and on paper I think they've got a better squad than Batley. It's going to be a good test for the players."

Eaton said Sunday's game will give him a chance to give a run-out to some players who have yet to feature or have not featured very much in the pre-season because of injuries or other commitments.

One of those is Aussie Brendan Rawlins, who had been on holiday spending Christmas and New Year with his family. Rawlins will be back in England tomorrow and Eaton is hoping he will play.

Winger Sam Gardner is expected to feature after a shoulder injury, new signing Jermaine Wray should be recovered from an ankle injury and Luke Sutton and Danny Murgatroyd are back in the squad following illnesses.

Richard Knight is still out for seven to ten days with a groin injury and Mick Fogerty and Mike Hastings have long-term injuries.

One player who will also feature is winger James Hutchinson, who has impressed in three pre-season games.

The former rugby union player with Wharfedale signed a contract with the Cougars on Tuesday night.
