Fifty-three brave souls turned out for the Silsden New Year's Resolution Fun Run 2008.

The 24th running of this event on New Year's Day saw victory for local residents in both male and female categories.

In fact Silsden's Tamara Hird and her boyfriend Jason Helmsley won the men's and women's races, respectively. Helm-sley, who won the race in 1999 and 2004, finished in a time of 18.05.

Hird, a member of Wharfe-dale Harriers, was also the fastest lady in 1990, 1992 and 2007. Hird's time of 20.54 bested her nearest competitor by more than a minute.

Fellow Cobbydaler Kay Pearce, a member of Ilkley Harriers, was second with a time of 22.04.

The 53 runners who braved the inclement conditions to complete the three "fun" miles, with 500 feet of climbing, included survivors of the previous days' Auld Lang Syne race on Penistone Hill and the "regular crew" of athletics club members, Cobbydalers and people who live along the course.

The first place V50 runner was Peter Metcalfe of Hellifield, who has completed all 24 Silsden events.

Other results included Neil Pate of Skipton finishing second in 18.22. Skipton's Jonathan Brad-shaw, who runs for Wharfedale Harriers, was third in 18.45. He also was the first U-17s runner to cross the line.

The 2003 winner Damien Scholes of Keighley & Craven Athletics Club was fourth in 19.39.

Behind Hird and Pearce in the ladies race was Lynn Whittaker finishing third in 24.02. She was also the first LV40 to cross the line. Hilary Andrews was fourth in 25.37.

Simon Throup of Wharfedale Harriers won the V40 with a time of 21.27. Metcalfe won the V50 title in 22.05 while Lesley Lamb of Eastburn won the LV50 in 26.52.

Tony Minikin of Keighley & Craven AC won the V60 in 22.29, while Patricia Walker of Horsforth took the LV60 in 28.59.

The proceeds from the event were split this year between Silsden AFC and Bramley Buffaloes RLC.
