The Yorkshire Veterans Cross Country Championships, held at Greenhead School on Sunday, was declared a success by hosts Keighley & Craven Athletics Club.

The Yorkshire Veterans Athletic Association is open to all runners aged 35 or over.

Competitors race against other athletes in the same age group.

A large field in all age categories had to contend with a testing course that was made even harder by weeks of rain, leaving many runners ankle deep in mud on certain parts of the course.

Many local clubs, including the hosts, found success in both men's and ladies races.

The Keighley & Craven AC ladies team of Tizz Woffenden, Liz Tomes and Clare Stevens took the V35 team trophy and not to be outdone, the Men followed up with gold in the same category, through brilliant performances by Zip Jones (15th), Nigel Bedell (18th) and Chris Loftus (19th).

Tomes won an individual silver medal in the ladies 50+ race and Woffenden won bronze in the V35 category.

In the V40 race Ian Holmes of Keighley ran out overall winner and was the first runner to count for the winning Bingley Harriers team.

Keighley & Craven AC came fourth in a strong field.

Other team results included Keighley & Craven AC's team coming eighth in the MV50 category and fourth in the MV60 category. Bingley Harriers won the MV60 category and finished fourth in the MV35 category.

A big winner on the day was the Keighley & Craven junior section, which profited by more than £200 from the sale of tea, coffee and homemade cakes. The parents had been busy baking all week.

Keighley & Craven AC would like to thank all helpers, marshals and competitors for making it a fantastic event.

The club also would like to say a particular thank you to Greenhead School and David Copeland.
