IT WAS second time lucky for Steeton on Merseyside as they ran out 3-1 winners in their postponed fixture at South Liverpool in the NWCFL First Division North on Saturday.
In truth, the Chevrons should have been out of sight in an entertaining first half that saw Luke Baldwin open the scoring with 10 minutes on the clock before Kayle Price saw his penalty palmed away by South goalkeeper Peter Webster.
They were almost made to pay for failing to convert their chances, with Cameron Dalton equalising with a deflected effort, but late strikes from Jahro Parchment and Mo Farhan Subhani secured an important three points for the men in green.
Early goals have been characteristic of Steeton this season, and they again found themselves in front inside the opening 10 minutes.
Jerry White found Price with a stunning 40-yard pass, with the striker squaring the ball to Baldwin to cut inside and fire a low drive under Webster into the bottom corner.
Joe Snowden also fired narrowly over the bar for Steeton in a lively opening quarter, before the visitors had a chance to double their lead in the 28th minute when Parchment was brought down by Andrew Lloyd in the box.
Price stepped up to take the spot-kick, with Webster quickly down to his right to steer the ball to safety.
Josh McKiernon and Jerry White also forced Webster into saves in an action-packed end to the half.
With tensions growing after the break, it looked as though the side that scored the next goal would go on to win the match.
That proved to be South Liverpool, with winger Owen Hough finding space down the right wing to cross for Dalton, who saw his shot from the edge of the box take two deflections before looping over Stuart Cross and into the top corner.
McKiernon hit the crossbar before drawing a fantastic reaction save from the impressive Webster as Steeton drove forward, and the visitors eventually restored their advantage in the 80th minute.
Toby Jeffrey intercepted the ball on the halfway line before finding Parchment, who beat the offside trap to coolly fire the ball into the back of the net.
Things went from bad to worse for the hosts from the restart, with substitute Rio Merryfield sent off for elbowing Jack Lynn in an off-the-ball incident.
South, reduced to nine men after an injury, were finally floored by the Chevrons scoring a third deep into injury time.
The ever-present Farhan Subhani capitalised on a sloppy pass in the home defence to race through on goal, round Webster, and slot his first Steeton goal into an empty net.
The win moves the Chevrons into the top half of the table, ahead of a tricky clash at title-chasing local rivals Golcar United this Saturday.
