DOUBLES specialist Jonny O’Mara was knocked out of the Australian Open men’s doubles at the second round stage last Friday.
The 26-year-old, who is from Keighley, battled hard alongside Belarusian partner Andrei Vasilevski, but the duo were well beaten by third seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.
Spaniard Granollers and Argentinian Zeballos had too much for O’Mara and Vasilevski, as they coasted to a 6-3 6-3 victory.
A day earlier, the Keighley tennis star and his partner comfortably won their first round match, 6-2 6-2 against American Mackenzie McDonald and home favourite John Millman.
It ended Keighley interest in the first Grand Slam of the year, after Oxenhope prospect Francesca Jones retired with injury in her opening qualifying match a fortnight ago.
That same week, O’Mara was taking part in the Sydney International tournament to help him prepare for the Australian Open.
He competed in that one alongside France’s Fabrice Martin, and went on a good run to the quarter-finals.
The duo beat Andreas Seppi and Daniel Altmaier in straight sets in the round of 32, before edging out fourth seeds Tim Putz and Michael Venus in a three-set epic in the last-16.
Italian pair Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini knocked out O’Mara and Martin in the quarter-finals, beating them 7-5 7-5.
