The big news in the top tier of British football last week was the appointment of Kevin Keegan as manager at Newcastle.

"King Kev" is adored by the fanatical fans on Tyneside, and the hope in the North East is that he will bring a stylish brand of football back to the club, which had been missing under previous manager Sam Allardyce.

However Keegan's first game in charge was a 0-0 draw against Bolton. The clean sheet was welcomed but a bit unusual for a Keegan coached team.

Bolton manager Gary Megson went to spoil the party and did so successfully, which I think could be a sign of things to come for teams playing against the Tyneside club.

Put a few men behind the ball and stop them playing the brand of football that the fans want.

It will be interesting to see how Keegan does.

His most recent club, Manchester City, played a stylish brand of football under new manager Sven Goran Eriksson early on in the season. But now the rest of the Premiership knows all about the club's new signings and the Blues are struggling to achieve a result beyond 1-0, whether it be a win or a loss.

While they looked a certainty for a European place early on, teams like Everton and Aston Villa are playing much better now.

David Moyes has built an excellent squad at Everton and Martin O'Neill is doing an excellent job with a relatively small squad at Villa. While Portsmouth, Blackburn and West Ham also are in the running for a European place, I wonder if an in-form Tottenham, under the watchful eye of Juande Ramos, might come in a steal a UEFA Cup spot via the Carling Cup.
