A young man from Oxenhope has been called up to play for the for a strong Yorkshire U-20s squad who hope to defend their title at Twickenham later this season.

Eighteen-year-old Alex Brown, who plays in the first team at Keighley RUFC, played in the Yorkshire U-20s first game, a 42-6 victory against Cumbria played at Skipton on Sunday.

Brown, who came off the bench to play for 20 minutes, set up one try and kicked two conversions.

Kicking is actually one of Brown's strengths, said Keighley RUFC chairman Bob Swift.

Swift said: "For a young player, I think he has a great awareness of what's going on around him.

"His kicking has improved considerly in the last year or two, and his place-kicking has been quite exceptional this year."

Swift said of the young stand off, "We're very proud of him. It's a great tribute to the junior section at the club who have coached him since he was a little boy."

Brown, who started playing at Keighley when he was six-years-old, paid tribute to his coaches at the junior level - Terry Hawley and Martin Long, who he said were very inspirational to him.

Speaking about his chance to play for Yorkshire, Brown said: "I'm obviously very proud to be representing Yorkshire. We hope to win at Twickenham again this year."

Swift added: "We've seen Alex mature as a player over the years. It's a great feather in our cap but also for young Alex to play for Yorkshire.

"We hope he'll stay with us for a lot of years."
