A Stanbury teenager has had a cracking start to 2008 by winning two table tennis gold medals in Sweden at the weekend.

Mary Fuller, 15, a member of Oakbank Table Tennis Club and a pupil at Oakbank School, attended the Molndals Open Table Tennis Championships in Gothernburg City on Saturday and Sunday.

Her coach, Hans Soova, said: "Mary went to the championships to gain experience against continental opposition. She came home with new found confidence and two singles titles to her credit."

Fuller won the girls U-15 and U-17 titles, and Soova said that she won against some strong competition.

"Mary showed the qualities of a champion.

"More remarkably, Mary had only just started to practice after lay-off due to an injury to her playing hand."

Because of the injury, going into the tournament, Soova said: "We gave ourselves a few more weeks for Mary to find her true form."

But Mary surprised her coach by winning the U-17s final against Sweden's Jessica Stensby, who she beat 9-11, 11-7, 11-8 and 11-7.

She also beat Sweden's Jennifer Johnsson in the U-15s final. The scores of the four games were 9-11, 11-6, 11-3 and 11-8.

At the same event, Mary also competed in two other competitions, the U-20s, where she lost in the quarter-finals to the eventual winner, and the ladies open, where she lost in the group play-offs.

Mary was accompanied to the competition by her mother, Nicola, who is very grateful to the Sportsaid fund and the bactive 2012 fund, which gave Mary a grant of the £1,000.

Soova said: "I'm delighted with the grant, which will enable Mary to compete against players from abroad.

"At this stage of Mary's career, it's very important to gain this kind of experience for her to make progress."

Oakbank School has also given Mary a £100 grant.
