It was an extra special Mother's Day treat for health care support worker Sandra Fairburn from Silsden on Sunday.

She was the guest of honour at the Northern Rail Cup clash between Keighley Cougars and Whitehaven having been selected as the winner of Northern Rail's competition in the Keighley News.

Sandra, 35, who works at Airedale Hospital, is a trainee plumber in her spare' time and she was nominated for the competition which looked for a super mum' by her daughters, nine-year-old Louise and eight-year-old Rebecca.

And to make it an even more special Mother's Day for single mum Sandra, besides taking her two girls to the game, she was accompanied to the pre-match lunch by her mum, Susan Hollings.

"I was stunned when I got the telephone call telling me that I'd won the competition," said Sandra. In fact I thought it was somebody pulling my leg because I've never won anything like this before."

It was Sandra's first trip to watch rugby league for many years. She explained: "My Dad used to bring me down to watch Keighley's games but that was a long time ago. We had a great time and the atmosphere at Cougar Park was fantastic. It was a proper Mother's Day treat."

Sandra was also invited to present Cougars' forward Will Cartledge with his Northern Rail Cup Player of the Round award for an outstanding performance against Workington last month. As a thank you to Louise and Rebecca for nominating their mum both girls received signed match balls.

The afternoon held just one disappointment for the family. Despite putting on a great performance, Cougars lost 32-16 to Whitehaven.
