Head coach Barry Eaton will be taking a look at the depth of his Keighley Cougars' squad when they host Workington Town in the final game of the Northern Rail Cup at Cougar Park on Sunday (kick off 3pm).

Eaton said: "I'm going to give one or two players an opportunity. There's a lot of competition for places and plenty of player who haven't had a chance to stake a claim."

Amongst those who could feature is second rower Wayne Sutcliffe, who Eaton said played really well in the first half hour of the Cougars Reserve Grade team's 32-10 victory against Oldham last Thursday.

Winger Ryan Smith might also be in the squad for Sunday. Eaton said Smith played well in pre-season but was unlucky when he came down with a virus and tonsillitis, which kept him out of training.

One player who almost certainly will feature is new signing, former Widnes Vikings star Dan Potter.

Potter, 29, has Super League experience and was captain of York City Knights last season. He turned down a new deal at Huntington Stadium and thought about quitting the professional game until Eaton enticed him to Keighley.

Eaton said: "I'm delighted we've managed to get Dan to sign up with us. I played with him at Widnes where he had three years in Super League and he's certainly got all the right qualities.

"He was skipper at York and is a creative centre as well as being one of the best defensive centres throughout the National Leagues. We were probably a little light in that position but he'll bring real competition for us there now."

Potter, who started out in Leeds Rhinos' Academy and also appeared with Leigh and Dewsbury, played the full 80 minutes in the reserve grade game and showed his quality.

Eaton said: "He was thrown in at the deep end but was one of the best players out on the pitch. He scored an early try and the final try of the game. He certainly is one of the final pieces of the jigsaw and he will strengthen one area where we've been a bit thin, the three-quarters."

Injury returnee Mike Hastings came through the reserve game unscathed but Eaton said fellow centre Mick Fogerty is still at least three weeks away from returning to the squad.

One player who will not feature for the first team on Sunday is Oliver Pursglove, who has a shoulder injury.

Although he plans on using his squad, Eaton still wants to beat Workington Town.

"We want to go out and win. But I do feel I have the strength in depth that I'm not going to weaken the team. It's now up to them to earn the opportunity to wear that first team jersey."
