ALBION Sports will have been as gutted as Silsden last night, as Penistone Church ensured both Bradford Districts side suffered Wednesday woe.
While the Cobbydalers can longer get promoted from the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, they were playing superbly and found themselves 2-0 up at home to Penistone Church with 20 minutes to go.
That was music to Albion’s ears, who knew that if Penistone dropped points, they were guaranteed to finish in the fifth and final play-off spot.
But a sensational comeback from the Sheffield-based visitors saw them pinch a thrilling 3-2 victory the winner scored by former Silsden and Eccleshill United man Antony Brown with four minutes to go.
The result means Penistone will pip Albion, who have finished their league season, to the play-offs if they win their final two games.
Silsden, whose goals last night came courtesy of Luke Brooksbank and Kayle Price in the first half, stay eighth in the table with one league game remaining.
Eccleshill United secured safety a few weeks ago, but they still have three league games to go, all home fixtures.
Their Kingsway pitch in BD2 has been struggling with the wet weather of late, and that was the reason for last night’s game against visiting Barton Town being postponed.
Liversedge’s Clayborn ground has felt the full force of the recent rain too, to the point that their Northern Premier League East Division game at home to Grantham Town on Tuesday was due to be hosted by Ossett United.
Sadly, Ossett’s pitch was left waterlogged by the terrible weather conditions that night too, so the game was postponed.
Sedge are in mid-table, but that game could have huge ramifications for Grantham who are one point from safety, breathing down the necks of both Ossett and Brighouse Town in their attempts to escape.
Guiseley were all set to host Worksop Town at Nethermoor in the NPL Premier Division on Tuesday night, a game they have to win to have any chance of making the play-offs, but that was also rained off.
Farsley Celtic did get to play on Tuesday night, with their 1-0 defeat at Peterborough Sports a bitter blow, as it leaves them in the National League North relegation zone on goal difference with two games to go.
