STEETON have hauled themselves off the canvas over the last week and a half, picking up seven points in three games following a humiliating 6-1 defeat on August 10 to Droylsden.

That nightmarish outing left them second bottom in the North West Counties Football League First Division North, with one draw and four defeats from their opening five games.

But a thrilling 3-2 triumph at Daisy Hill three days later gave them a much-needed boost, then things got even better on Saturday when Josh Coe grabbed a last-gasp winner in a 1-0 victory over fellow slow-starters Garstang.

And Coe was the late hero once again on Tuesday night, holding his nerve to score a penalty in stoppage time to secure a 3-3 draw with visiting Bacup Borough at Marley.

Jake Townsend flashed a shot wide in the opening seconds for the Chevrons, setting the tone for a frantic encounter.

A long ball caught Steeton out on the 15 minute mark, but James Catlow made a great save to deny Bacup.

Alex Stewart was denied by a great stop midway through the first half, but Ollie Kirkpatrick headed home the resulting corner to put the hosts ahead.

But Borough equalised instantly, Kyle Siddle getting in, rounding Catlow, and knocking it into the empty net.

Emerson Mitchell was sin-binned for dissent just before the interval, meaning Steeton had to begin the second half with 10 men.

They survived with little trouble, and Jacob Smith almost put them in front, just failing to turn home a corner at the far post.

But instead it was Bacup who went in front, Michael Gervin capitalising on a mistake at the back from the Chevrons to score.

Townsend then dragged a shot wide from a great position, before Steeton made their task more difficult again, with Kyle Hancock sin-binned.

And when Siddle fired home a third against the 10-man hosts with 15 minutes to go, the game looked over.

But as Hancock returned, Roy Mason’s side halved the deficit, Bacup keeper Josh Brooks misjudging a punch from a corner and allowing the ball to fly into the net.

The goal was eventually awarded to corner taker Stewart.

The visitors then had appeals for a Catlow handball outside his box waved away, before Coe turned a late corner over the bar.

But he made up for that when Steeton were awarded a penalty three minutes into injury-time, Coe stroking it past Brooks and into the bottom corner to secure his side a draw.

Steeton’s next league game is at home to AFC Blackpool on Saturday, before a quick turnaround as they visit Thornton Cleveleys on Bank Holiday Monday.
