SILSDEN recovered from an extremely early setback to claim a brilliant 2-1 win at fellow high-flyers Golcar United at the weekend.
The hosts went into the game top of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division and showed why on Saturday, with Oliver Russon putting them in front inside the opening minute.
Golcar should have gone 2-0 up, but headed a great chance wide, and that seemed to galvanise the away side.
Tom Greaves got in behind for the Cobbydalers and took the ball past the keeper, but that left him with a difficult angle to score from and he was unable to find the net.
Golcar fired a strike over the bar after a quarter-of-an-hour, before Silsden equalised moments later.
Greaves failed to pull off an overhead kick, but his miscue fell perfectly into the path of Kayle Price, whose deflected effort found the net.
Silsden looked likeliest to score next, but defender Harry Coates headed two near-identical efforts over the bar.
Greaves then came close, yet his strike from Jack Stockdill’s ball in failed to get the power needed to beat Harry Stead in the Golcar net.
Luke Brooksbank did brilliantly to stop a threatening counter attack from the hosts, while Ross Daly and Stockdill both came close with headers just before half-time.
Brooksbank just failed to make the right connection with a diving header moments after the break, with Golcar dragging a good chance wide on the hour mark.
That proved costly, as Greaves put Silsden in front on 74 minutes, forcing home a set-piece that required a discussion between referee and linesman before the goal was eventually given.
In a frantic ending, Stead made a superb one-on-one save from Price, Silsden keeper Callum Bradbury produced a fine stop at his near post, and Brooksbank screwed a great chance wide after intercepting a Golcar pass out from the back.
But that miss did not prove costly, as Silsden claimed all three points to move up to third in the table, just one point behind new leaders Albion Sports.
The Cobbydalers are back in action tomorrow night, as they visit Yorkshire Amateur for a West Riding County Cup first-round tie.
